And Here We Go!

The first ramp we built had it's limitations but it's where we set the ground work of the years to come. Paul lived one the street directly below our street and in perfect alignment with our house so he had a perfect view of the first ramp.  I remember him telling me one day that he was hanging out in his front yard and he could see us riding the ramp.  He saw the usual kickturns and fakies and such but then he saw something he had never seen before.  I started doing these mid-ramp hand plants and Paul saw us flying above the railing with one hand down.  "WTF, I have to get up there".  I don't even know what board I was riding at the time, but with my no name board, my vinyl ski gloves and my Hockey helmet I hit it.  I would shoot down the starting ramp, grab the inside of my board with my left hand, plant my right hand on the deck of the ramp and shoot my board up into the air, swing it around and land it and roll out.  You can see the ramp in the previous pictures, not much to look at but very capable of technical tricks.  Paul was the most radical skater on our ramp and at the time so he was always pushing the boundries.  There was this bench holding up the ramp in the middle and it stuck out to the left side.  One day we were skating and Paul started riding up the ramp half way and then grinding off the side of the ramp onto the edge of the bench and flying off the side. We were stoked.  We would see this stuff in the mags but never in real life.  The handplants and the backside grinds made our ramp a certifiable mark in So. City Skating history.
In terms of a timeline this next ramp is out of sequence but I had to throw it in for the shear magnitude of its size and what it took to make it.  One summer back in the early 80's I took a trip to Indiana to visit my ex and stayed there for two weeks.  I brought my two pairs of parachute pants, my checkered pull over Tee Shirts and my Vans. I also brought my board, so I was ready to skate but was severely let down. This is the mid-west and it is flat, not a hill, bank or slope of any kind in sight.  What to do? Build a ramp!  My ex had this huge back yard with nothing in it.  This was the perfect spot to make my mark in the Mid-West.  I didn't have any money to buy the wood and neither did the family that I was staying with but we did have knowledge of some local construction sites with tons of wood laying out on pallets.  We had a station wagon to our disposal and in the dark of the night we gathered up enough 2x6s, 2x4s, and sheets of ply to construct the half pipe.  How do kids build ramps with no money? How do Graffiti Artist make their mark on today's urban landscape with no money? And how did street artist like Keith Harring, Basquiat, and Twist make their mark?  At first we all had to take something that wasn't ours whether it was materials to build with, paint to spray with or a wall to scribe on we all created a foundation of youthful angst and expressionism.  The ramp went up in no time and soon I was doing drop-ins and gathering more scars to come home with.  I was the only one to skate the ramp at the time so it seemed it's purpose was to fill our time for my two weeks there and not really to skate it.  I did have fun building it and later I was told the some local kids bought the ramp, disassembled it and moved it on.  All that was left was the mark in the faded grass and scraps of wood lying around the yard.
I had owned many boards since I started skating and we also made alot of boards as we were growing up.  Right now I own about 32 boards and they are all hanging up for display in my kids playroom.  I have a wide range from a Banana Board, Plastic and wood Makaha boards, Stacey Peralta's G&S WarpTail, to a Steve Caballero board given to me from his own collection, and many more. I own and have owned boards buy Duane Peters, Neil Blender, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero and by manufactures such as Santa Cruz, Sims, Gorden and Smith, Makaha and others.

Ramps, Parks and Boards

Back in the 70's we didn't have a skatepark close to my home or atleast I had no means of getting to one.  There was a Skatepark in Burlingame and I had only gone there once to take a look but there was really no one to take us so we had to build our own.  Ramps were easy to build and wood was easy to come by and we had the space, so why not.

Our first ramp was built in our backyard at our house in So. City.  We didn't really have a yard but we had this huge wooden deck that no one used except for us kids.  I remember seeing the Architects plans for the deck and they modeled this sort of tropical backdrop of leisure and elegance.  My parents had vision so they bought into the semblance of luxury and easy living.  Of course I don't remember any extravagant parties or Sunday afternoons eating brunch out on the deck.  What I do remember is the fog, wind and cold weather in So. City and it's power over keeping us indoors most days of the year.  We would set old furniture outside and in a number of weeks you could see the deterioration from the harsh weather.  What a perfect place to build a ramp.  No one used the deck, if we thrashed the ramp or the deck it was ok because we could just replace the broken parts and we had a view.  Our house has a view of this valley and the deck was built approximately 20 feet above a sloping hill so the view was great.  Along with the view was the imminent plunge off the side of the railing.  We built the eight foot wide ramp right next to the railing so  a fall to the right could of landed us 20 feet below amongst foliage, rocks, and the hidden marijuana plants begging for sunlight. The view actually was an advertisement for use.  All of the kids below us, not below us, but living below us could see the ramp and us riding at nights and weekends.  Some of us who rode from So.City were myself, Sergio Huerta, and others whom I can't seem to remember their names.  We actually had one person rise from our ventures and make it into the pro and magazine scene.  You can look up Paul Hugasion and find pictures of him in Thrasher and the parks in the Midwest.

Powell Peralta Past and Present.

When does skateboarding begin?  Is it when we get that new board or is it when we first see that picture of someone skateboarding in a magazine? Skateboarder Magazine was my entry into the skateboarding world back in the 70's. I didn't own a skateboard and I wouldn't own one for a while so I relied on the images and the rich skateboarding culture that arose from the pages as me and my brother flipped each one with gleeful adolescence anticipation.

My Grandparents lived in the Mission District in San Francisco back in the 70's durring the time when we discovered skateboarding.  For Chirstmas one year they bought me a subscription to Skateboarder Magazine and I am sure I thought this was the best present I could ever receive so I waited.  As the weeks and months went by the issues never arrived. I think it was the longest year in my life as with each passing month the rags never showed up.  My naive confidence in all that was supposed to be right soon dissipated into a cloud of distrust and angst.  My Grandparents, god bless them, tried for months to contact the publisher about the failed attempt at a subscription and they either never responded or my grandparents didn't want to keep upsetting me, but I never knew how or if it ever worked itself out.  Either way, the magazine never arrived and my brother and I were starved for the images and the stories that enveloped us as we could sit for hours gleaming at the pages of our self prescribed manual for life.

I have this memory of my brother and I sitting atop the 16th and Mission Bart station, against the surrounding railing, reading two different copies of Skateboarder. As we were stomping around the Mission we found one of the stores had kept all their copies of the magazine on the shelf, even last months edition, so we bought both.  It's one of those memories we all have where we are like the third person and can see ourselves and all that surrounds us like a 360 degree prisim.  I can see us sitting there on a Saturday afternoon with the magazine buried in our laps with our heads tilted downward seeming intensely frozen in time.  I look back on this memory as a time of innocence and sibling bonding that will forever be imprinted in my mind.

Since this inception into the world of skateboarding I have owned many boards, built many ramps and suffered many injuries but still I skate to this day. I remember my first board from Christmas one year.  It  was as flat as you could imagine, real short and made out of fiberglass and yellow. It had silver alloy trucks, and yellow goldish urethane wheels with balled bearings.  I remember my dad using his engraver to embellish the top of the board with flames and my name in a fancy cursive. This board was the shit and I felt like the luckiest boy around.  This was back in the day when there was no grip tape or we just didn't know about it and it's benefits.  We lived on a hill in South San Francisco which gave way to going fast down hill on our bikes, skateboards and coasters fastened from junk wood and wheels from grocery carts.  I thought it would be cool if I went as far as I could up the hill and skated down towards my house.  Since I was new to skateboarding there was no grip tape on the board and my trucks were not properly adjusted for downhill racing. In order to sustain balance during downhill and fast treks the trucks on a skateboard must be adjusted to the point of almost no movement.  A loosely adjusted truck will wobble at extreme speeds rendering the board and the experience unrideable. As I headed down the hill I  pushed once, placed both feet on the board and headed straight down.  I didn't carve left to right, or try any way to reduce my speed I just headed straight down the hill standing as straight up as I
could.  I was not privy to the accepted stance of bending your knees and holding your arms out to sustain balance.
I was a fledgling skateboarder with little skills but head-strong and determined to conquer the hill. Soon into my race down the hill the board started to wiggle and wobble uncontrollable and, of course, as you can imagine, I flew off the board and headed straight towards the asphalt.  At this point stop.  I could of benefitted from the training of Tumbling and or Martial Arts that would of allowed me to use my skills of  Tuck and Roll.  Instead my instincts told me to push out my arms and land on my hands with my elbows locked in place ready for the impact.  With the slam came the crack and the fractured wrist. With this came the cast and the stories of my first skateboarding accident and broken bone. This began a lifelong journey of crash and burn and do it again.  Most people learn from their mistakes but skateboarders just keep trying regardless of the ensuing pain and possible embarrassment in hopes to succeed or land the trick just once.

Thanks for reading.  Look for the next part on my journey into skateboard coming soon.

Skimboard Blank Sale - 50 x 19" Blanks:

Here is your chance to start making your own boards.  Start off with an engineered cut blank with the rockers already cut in place for the front and rear.  All you have to do is finish the rails, apply the art and start glassing.  These are 2 # (Pound) Density Styrene blanks with no art or glass or resin on them.  You will need to finish these boards before riding.  Put on your DIY hat and start skimming right away.

The size of the boards are 50" x 19" wide and 3/4" thick.  You can shape the rails and the tail of the board to your specifications or just use the design I have cut.  The rails will come squared off so you will need to shape them.

These blanks can only be constructed with EPOXY Resin.  Polyester resin will NOT work on these boards.  Use any glass you like and even Carbon Fibre and Kevlar.  Just have fun with it.

The Price of the blanks are Discounted at $50.00 + $18.00 shipping to your Continental USA address.

Only a few blanks left so don't miss out.  Go to http://www.red5ive.com/ and click on the Blanks link at the top of the page and use the "Buy it now" button.  This will direct you to Paypal to finish the transaction.

Just got back from Colorado. Aurora is next to Denver, although I didn't get a chance to check out Denver Skatepark I did check out Wheel Skatepark. This park rocked!!! Huge skatepark and BMX park right next to it. The Skatepark is Bike Friendly. The large bowl had about 7 guys riding bikes. A couple of guys were pulling off 7 foot airs flawlessly. If you get a chance you should check out this park. Worth the ride or drive.....

Great white shark warning off California

Reposted from SFGATE.com

(07-01) 08:35 PDT Ventura, Calif. (AP) --

The National Park Service is warning surfers, snorkelers and swimmers that it's the great white shark birthing season off the California coast and the creatures are making their presence known as they attack seals.

Sea lions were recently attacked by great whites on three occasions off Santa Barbara Island, a popular snorkeling area about 40 miles south of Ventura.

A weekend great white off Santa Barbara's East Beach led officials to keep youngsters in the Junior Lifeguard program on the beach Monday and Tuesday. On Sunday, a great white pup was found dead at Rincon Beach.

Marine Conservation Science Institute president Michael Domeier says pregnant females give birth this time of year in shallow California waters.

New Blanks Ready for Glass

IMG_4915

Here are the New Pro Blanks ready for Glassing this summer.  I will embark on creating a new series of boards based on this new shape. If you would like to pick up one of these for this Summers road trips let me know and I will start on it right away.  Three boards will be a limited edition “Bowl –A-Rama” board with this cool graphic I picked up at Laney College last Sunday.  Laney is Flea that happens once a week in Oakland, Ca.  These new boards have a thicker profile for a stiffer ride.  I do not use a stringer on the board.  If they break, buy another.  But really, in most cases they will not snap.  If you are a pro rider then you already have many boards in your ride ready for the next wave.

This weekend is a big Comp at Luguna Beach.  Don’t miss out.  I am trying to make it down there but who knows……. There are a couple more comps this season in CA, socal and norcal.

Check out the breaks at Crissy Field San Francisco below the Golden Gate Bridge.  The water is cold so wear a wetsuit but they are perfect for skimmming.  You will have to be the attention of all the tourist walking by.

Be sure to follow my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/youmakmesik as I will be posting videos  of my new board series in construction.

Also, Go Skateboarding Day is, around the World, June 21st.  Look for events art your local skateshop or skatepark.  Visit – www.goskateboardingday.org

Chicano Park Live!

Must Represent La Raza!  100th Anniversary of Emiliano Zapata parade at Chicano Park in San Diego. I actually made it down there.  The murals were amazing, a must see.  There is so much history in the art and the paintings decorating the freeway. The park is vast and well take care of. Many props to the city of San Diego.

Tony Alva's Skateshop

Tony Alva's Skateshop on Fairfax in LA. This is my new favorite skateshop because the girl working the counter was super nice.  Hanging on the wall were Jeff Ho creations and used in the film Lords of Dogtown.

Right past the blur you can see Tony's Surfboard, the green one.
Surfing from Oceanside Pier - in Ocean side. (not me)
Tamarack Beach
What it takes for me to go on a trip.  Of course you gotta have a skimboard at all times.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Ok, here we go......

OK, I have pictures but am too lazy to download them off my camera.  Just got back from a week in San Diego.  Actually, North of San Diego like Oceanside and Encinitas and Tamarack Beach.  Went skimboarding right below the Oceanside pier and just north of Tamarack Beach.  F'n Rocked!!!  We must of went to at least 15 surf shops just to check them out.  They all had only 1 brand of Skimboard and we all know that brand.  I am here to change that...Watch out V.

Went to a couple of surf shops with the full on shaping room right next to the sales floor.  That's the life I want to lead.  Shape boards and skimboards when no one is shopping your store and run your own business during the day.  I would also make my own screenprinted shirts on-site. There was tons of foot traffic and this area is ripe for this lifestyle.  I really don't see myself doing this in Pacifica or even HMB.

We took a detour on the way home an headed up Fairfax to Tony Alva's Skate shop.  The chick working the counter was super cool.  I think here name was Grace or Cathy, sorry can't remember.  I was in the store with my youngest son and she gave him 2 free TechDeck Packs, so I made a reference to my others in the car and she handed me 4 more TechDeck Packs.  How F'n cool is that, super cool!! That is my new favorite skateshop.

I am on my way to making skimboards from a mold.  Pop and Drop so watch out, here they come.  The boards will be cost efficient so I can make more and I will have more options with art and funky fabrics that I can apply to the boards.  Stay Tuned........

Hand Layup VS. a MOld.......?

Making these skimboards takes hours and sometimes days.  If anyone has worked with fiberglass or made a surfboard then you know how labor intensive the process can be.  Don't get me wrong, the process of finishing a board is very rewarding and the skills learned making each board is priceless.

With all that said I am contemplating a mold for my skimboards.  A lot of the major brands already use molds for their boars - Slop and Pop........ Super quick and easy.  The upfront cost for this process is a little higher.  The cost of the mold, the extra tools needed for the molding process, the cost for another mold when your ruin the first one.  I just dono....

A couple of props to my suppliers - Fiberglass Supply, Tap Plastics and Fiberglass Hawaii.

Watch for the new molded boards to Pop on the scene within the next year.  I will keep you posted on my trials.

thanks for reading.

mavericks onshore flood

No words are needed, this was just CRAZY!

Mavericks Surfing Live

This is it. The premiere Nor Cal Surfing event of the year. Big Jumbotrons my be nice at PacBell and Streaming Live on Facebook, but nothing beats being there in person and just experiencing the surf. Got there at 7:30 in the Am this morning. Even with that we still had to walk at least 20min to the point. I chose, this year, to climb the mountain and not venture out onto the rocks at the Point below. And this was a good choice. There was not a good scene today on the beach. The waves came crashing in and took out the BandStand, a couple of shade tents and some people out into the water. It was pretty friken crazy. It looked super dangerous down there. Sure Hope no one got hurt.

The waves were HUGE, and the surfers took advantage. We had a great spot up on the hill with a direct line of site to the waves. I shot some video on my Flip and some Video on my Iphone so I could not zoom in very much, but you can totally see that the waves were slammin today. There was just a huge crowd, like a million people. Maybe not a Million but it was packed.

We got there early, caught some waves, got some food, picked up some merchandise, watched the Jumbotron and headed home, all before 11:00 am Today.

If you missed it, then maybe next year.............

Skimboard Fiberglass Step #4 Glassing

Getting some good respoonse on the latest of the series, but I am still not done with the board. I am still editing the footage but the next steps to go live are the Resin Floodcoating and the finishing steps. The new resin has some new UV protection so it appears a little blue but all for the good. The UV protection will stop the board from getting yellow in the sun, Nice!! When all is said and done I will take this board out to the Beach in El Granada, right down the street from the Mavericks in HMB and try it out.

This is someting that i have not even touched on in this blog.....skimboard Wax. And yes of course, we make that too. Already have the molds in place to pour a couple of sticks whenever I need it. Lately i have been mixing it up with color an anything else I can drop in while the wax is still curing. The wax is so termed Atomic PUdding. Just don't drink it.

We had the crab feed last weekend and some lucky soul picked up one of my boards. They didn't get the board I was working on, as expected, but they got another from my collection. Along with the board they bought a stick of wax, a T-Shirt and a Red 5 Trucker Hat. I screened it with a new screen that I have not shown on the blog just yet. It's like my new line for 2010 is out and I just haven't had time to put it out there.

The apparel section on the web page is surely lacking, sorry about that. I will have images up soon and a way to purchase. Cold hard cash and paypal are alwyas the perfered methods.

Ok for now...........

Skimboard Fiberglass Step #4 Glassing

Step #4 Glassing the board. This is the fun part. Will write more later, it's late. Enjoy......

Skimboard ART - Screenprinting the Logos

Here we are at Step Numero 3! These printed logos will appear on the bottom of the board which i will place under 2 layers of 6oz glass and Resin Research Epoxy resin. You might even see this next step come out as early as tonight. I have a tight deadline with this board and no time to waste. In this video I used my Sears Vac to create the vaccum for my vaccum table. Even though you see me tape the rice paper down on all sides I stll need the vaccum to keep the rice paper from sticking to the screen. This also allows the proper off-contact so the screen will pop off. I use large sheets of rice paper. Rice paper works because it completely dissapears when saturated with resin. This allows the logo to show through with no apparent backing. The ink is a water based ink. Water based ink is needed on styrene boards so the ink will no eat away at the board. Even though the ink is dry when I apply the logos water based ink is better for the enviro. What you didn't see in the video is the times I pulled a bad screen and had to throw them out. Next comes the glass...Look out!!

Skimboard Art

The next step is the art. And like Jackson Pollock it got a little crazy. Some of the paint is bleeding through the board but this just adds another dimension to the look of it. The bottom of the board will be a mirage of Red 5 logos and other signature items. At this point the blank is still a little wobbly but the board will strengthen with the application of the glass and resin. What is the next step........? The next step doesn't involve the board at all. I will have to silkscreen the logos and any other signature items I want to appear on the board. For this I will need some ink, some rice paper and a lot of time. Watch for this in the next step

see ya.....

Check out and learn about Pollock (click on the link below)
