Current struggles with Art......

How does art affect what I do every day and how does it affect that way I view my surroundings, my environment and my relationship with my family.  Art has a profound effect on the way I act, the way I feel  and the way interact.

I enjoy all types of Art, main stream, iconic, underground, and local……  There is the monthly event  here in the east bay, in Oakland, called the Art Murmur or as some will call it First Firday.   You can look up Oakland Art Murmur on the web.  There are many  art galleries all located in this sort or Hub in downtown Oakland and once a month they keep their doors open late and purvey their latest opening.   There is food , music, dancing in the streets, bands in the streets ( many bands) some playing on top of busses, inside of busses, on street corners and local artist selling their wares.  The city closes about 4 blocks of Telegraph Ave. in Oakland and there is performance art, demonstrations, food trucks, so the foodies are out in droves and last month there was a slam dunk demonstration.  And also the local dive burger drive in has a car show ripe with Boss cars and rusty Rat rods, girls dressed in their best betty 50’s outfit and of course the suicide lincoln’s with 18 in. spinners.  We get all the flava…….  Not to veer off to much from the question but I consider all of this art, be it local or known…. I frequently buy silk screened posters from the artist on the street because I like the art and it’s actually really good.

Some of my favorite known artist are:

 Keith harring
Andy Warhol
Peter Max
(do you see a trend)

I am more inclined to purchase a piece of Pop art with it’s iconic styling, definite lines of demarcation, bold colors, and messages about our society.  Art that has started from the street always inspires me and if they make it big then even better so they can get their message out there.

Then we have the street artist that are still alive and they went big, by no fault of their own, just trying to put the word out like Bansky in the UK, so f’n dope…..
Is it the mind of a genius or is it just a passionate prolific artist that is unrelenting in their struggle to be heard…

Then we have Daid Choe, a street artist who is now a  Millionaire because he painted the walls of facebook.  I don’t consider him famous for the facebook thing but because his Graffiti art is dope…..

As you can see I have a lot of favorites and influences……. I gotta say that keith harring has always been my favorite 21st century artist and it is too bad he had to go at such and early time in his life.  It’s mind boggling to try image as to what he would be creating if he were still alive with art, and mass media on a global scale.   I know there are still artist out there today doing just this but this does not discount the impact keith would have had today…….

Most Excellent! 100,000+ and Climbing

Most Excellent!  100,000+ and Climbing.  Small numbers compared to some of the Viral explosions on Youtube but this number is HUGE to us and we thank everyone for watching and most likely re-watching.  We are working on a new 2012 Red Five Graphic for the new Give-a-Way T-Shirt so send your emails in soon and Front the Fashion.

At least one new video will be coming soon but maybe more. Stay tuned.

Shown below is a spec of the Premium cut Blank for you to start making your own Skimboard.  The current price for the Blanks is $70 + Shipping.   I get it, I know it may seem a bit pricey but here is why.  The premium cut blank has the front and rear rockers cut in place so you don't have to bend the board your self.  The shape of the skimboard is also cut and we think this is huge when making a first skimbard.  All you have to worry about is rounding the rails and glassing the board.  The glassing and the resin work is definetly the hardest part of the board making process so we are trying to find ways to make the entire process fun and exciting.  We sell other styles of blanks for your first board.

We also sell the Rocker Plank.  This is a large rectangle plank approx 53 x 21 x 3/4" thick with the front and rear rockers cut in place.  This will add more freedom if you wanted to come up with your own skimboard shape, but the rockers are there and you don't have to bend the board and hold it in place as it cures.  These sell for $60.00 + shipping.

Then there is the Flat Plank.  This is a completely flat 2lb Density White Beaded Styrene foam.  the flat planks is the complete Blank Slate for you to be Creative in every direction.  These flat planks measure 53 x 21 x 3/4" thick and can be shipped directly to you.  These sell for $30.00 + shipping sent directly to you.

All of our planks require the use of a 2 Part Epoxy Resin system. Anything other than Epoxy will melt the board.

Again, Thanks for watching and keep checking back.

Give Me a Bullet, I mean a Blank

Blank, Blank, Blank.......
We have blanks.  Currently we have 2 sizes of blanks.  These blanks are made out of 2lb Polystyrene (White Beaded Foam).  They are cut to shape and they have the rockers in place in the front and the back of the board.  The front Rocker is steeper than the rear.  When you receive this blank, when purchased, all you have to do is round the rails and give the board a final smoothing sand, apply the art and you are ready to glass.   I have sucessfully finished the rails and gave my boards a final sand in under an hour.  After unpacking the blank I was glassing within minutes after finishing the rails.

The current sizes are - 50 x 19 x 3/4" thick  and 54  x 22 x 3/4" thick.  The blanks sell for $65+ shipping.  The more blanks you buy the cheaper they get.  I am in the process of repricing my blanks and they may come down in price by 15%.  Shipping is not included.  I do allow for Local Pickup in Northern California, USA in the San Francisco Area.

Summer is coming, so don't wait to start making your own board.  We also sell first time skimboard kits.  See previous post for that info.

Thanks for reading and you can always reach me at Skim@red5ive.com
