Friday Night at the De Young

The scene was loud, it was crowded, it was alive! If you ever walked the Mission before and noticed the great collection of Muralismo on the walls, in the back alleys and on the entire facades of schools and other buildings alike, then you should of been at the De young last night. There were 30+ artist, writers, muralist and just a great diverse crowd of creative people. Dr.Loco and the Rocking Jalepanos were playin on stage. A couple of spoken word artist took to the stage and slideshows of the Mission Murals graced the walls. Out of all the artist I spoke with and had sign my book, I met one of the most creative, prolific, and enduring artist attending the gala, Juana Alicia. If you don't know who she is then you owe it to your self to walk the Mission and discover her work. Take a mural tour or buy the book Street Art San Francisco, Mission Muralismo. This newly released book is a very in depth collection of essays, art, photography, and a culture that can only be found in the Misson District of San Francisco.
