Great white shark warning off California

Reposted from SFGATE.com

(07-01) 08:35 PDT Ventura, Calif. (AP) --

The National Park Service is warning surfers, snorkelers and swimmers that it's the great white shark birthing season off the California coast and the creatures are making their presence known as they attack seals.

Sea lions were recently attacked by great whites on three occasions off Santa Barbara Island, a popular snorkeling area about 40 miles south of Ventura.

A weekend great white off Santa Barbara's East Beach led officials to keep youngsters in the Junior Lifeguard program on the beach Monday and Tuesday. On Sunday, a great white pup was found dead at Rincon Beach.

Marine Conservation Science Institute president Michael Domeier says pregnant females give birth this time of year in shallow California waters.

New Blanks Ready for Glass

IMG_4915

Here are the New Pro Blanks ready for Glassing this summer.  I will embark on creating a new series of boards based on this new shape. If you would like to pick up one of these for this Summers road trips let me know and I will start on it right away.  Three boards will be a limited edition “Bowl –A-Rama” board with this cool graphic I picked up at Laney College last Sunday.  Laney is Flea that happens once a week in Oakland, Ca.  These new boards have a thicker profile for a stiffer ride.  I do not use a stringer on the board.  If they break, buy another.  But really, in most cases they will not snap.  If you are a pro rider then you already have many boards in your ride ready for the next wave.

This weekend is a big Comp at Luguna Beach.  Don’t miss out.  I am trying to make it down there but who knows……. There are a couple more comps this season in CA, socal and norcal.

Check out the breaks at Crissy Field San Francisco below the Golden Gate Bridge.  The water is cold so wear a wetsuit but they are perfect for skimmming.  You will have to be the attention of all the tourist walking by.

Be sure to follow my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/youmakmesik as I will be posting videos  of my new board series in construction.

Also, Go Skateboarding Day is, around the World, June 21st.  Look for events art your local skateshop or skatepark.  Visit – www.goskateboardingday.org

Chicano Park Live!

Must Represent La Raza!  100th Anniversary of Emiliano Zapata parade at Chicano Park in San Diego. I actually made it down there.  The murals were amazing, a must see.  There is so much history in the art and the paintings decorating the freeway. The park is vast and well take care of. Many props to the city of San Diego.

Tony Alva's Skateshop

Tony Alva's Skateshop on Fairfax in LA. This is my new favorite skateshop because the girl working the counter was super nice.  Hanging on the wall were Jeff Ho creations and used in the film Lords of Dogtown.

Right past the blur you can see Tony's Surfboard, the green one.
Surfing from Oceanside Pier - in Ocean side. (not me)
Tamarack Beach
What it takes for me to go on a trip.  Of course you gotta have a skimboard at all times.

Ok, here we go......

OK, I have pictures but am too lazy to download them off my camera.  Just got back from a week in San Diego.  Actually, North of San Diego like Oceanside and Encinitas and Tamarack Beach.  Went skimboarding right below the Oceanside pier and just north of Tamarack Beach.  F'n Rocked!!!  We must of went to at least 15 surf shops just to check them out.  They all had only 1 brand of Skimboard and we all know that brand.  I am here to change that...Watch out V.

Went to a couple of surf shops with the full on shaping room right next to the sales floor.  That's the life I want to lead.  Shape boards and skimboards when no one is shopping your store and run your own business during the day.  I would also make my own screenprinted shirts on-site. There was tons of foot traffic and this area is ripe for this lifestyle.  I really don't see myself doing this in Pacifica or even HMB.

We took a detour on the way home an headed up Fairfax to Tony Alva's Skate shop.  The chick working the counter was super cool.  I think here name was Grace or Cathy, sorry can't remember.  I was in the store with my youngest son and she gave him 2 free TechDeck Packs, so I made a reference to my others in the car and she handed me 4 more TechDeck Packs.  How F'n cool is that, super cool!! That is my new favorite skateshop.

I am on my way to making skimboards from a mold.  Pop and Drop so watch out, here they come.  The boards will be cost efficient so I can make more and I will have more options with art and funky fabrics that I can apply to the boards.  Stay Tuned........

Hand Layup VS. a MOld.......?

Making these skimboards takes hours and sometimes days.  If anyone has worked with fiberglass or made a surfboard then you know how labor intensive the process can be.  Don't get me wrong, the process of finishing a board is very rewarding and the skills learned making each board is priceless.

With all that said I am contemplating a mold for my skimboards.  A lot of the major brands already use molds for their boars - Slop and Pop........ Super quick and easy.  The upfront cost for this process is a little higher.  The cost of the mold, the extra tools needed for the molding process, the cost for another mold when your ruin the first one.  I just dono....

A couple of props to my suppliers - Fiberglass Supply, Tap Plastics and Fiberglass Hawaii.

Watch for the new molded boards to Pop on the scene within the next year.  I will keep you posted on my trials.

thanks for reading.
